Help for Beginners

If this is your first canoe trip we will be happy to demonstrate how to paddle a canoe, the proper way to pick it up, and correct loading. We will also show you how easily tents are pitched, and advise you in the use of camping equipment. Even beginners can have a successful canoe trip. We welcome the opportunity to help you.

What to Bring

We suggest you take the following items:

A good paperback or deck of cards is well worth its weight on a rainy day.

RODS - Spinning or spin casting rods are the all-around best choice for our area's walleye, bass, northern and lake trout. Fly rod? Bring it along...use poppers or streamers and you can have a great time with the smallmouth bass.

LURES - Bring your favorite tackle, but try to keep it compact...a few spoons, plugs, leaders, hooks and sinkers with a few jigs thrown in should do it. For your convenience we have a tackle shop in our store.

How to Reach Superior-North Canoe Outfitters

Travel U.S. 61 northeast out of Duluth, Minnesota for 110 miles along the North Shore Drive to Grand Marais.
Turn north on the Gunflint Trail and continue for a distance of 57 miles to Saganaga Lake and our base.
